I just came to the sobering realization that I’ve spent $82 on Virtual Console games. That’s a crap load of money for games that I rarely play. As it turns out, it’s just not that much fun to struggle through level after level of tough-as-nails NES “classics” whose only reward to the gamer (sufferer) is yet another, harder level.
And it’s not an issue of not being hardcore enough. Seriously. Some of these games are fundamentally flawed, and the only reason I ever thought they were fun in the first place was because I was too young and naïve to know any better.
So, until a Virtual Console Game Genie is available, my advice to all you nostalgia junkies is not to let memories of youthful gaming glory get the better of you. Use caution when you download or you may find yourself with a collection of broken games… and broken memories. The more you know.
This is something I’m very afraid of doing. I can’t imagine how many times I’d be sitting around enjoying an adult beverage and buy some horrible piece of crap game that I remember being awesome cuz I had it when I was 8, when every game was fun then.
