So I just had the cable guy come out and hook up my new cable internet connection this weekend. I heard that the cable company upped our bandwidth and for the same price I was paying for DSL, I got 10x the bandwidth. No brainer. I started playing Gears of War and hosted a few matches. I was pretty good at it beforehand, but I just started raping people left and right with the shotgun. In a 5 round game (which lasted only 5 rounds), I finished with 16 kills out of a possible 20. 2 were suicides and one was by my one buddy. It’s no wonder I got so frustrated with playing Halo 2. I got annihilated by the host every time.
Now that I’m on the other side of the fence, I realize that there is a great despairity in how online games are played. Sure some people are just plain good, however the remainder of the gamers should not be penalized because someone has a faster connection. Why does there need to be a connection host in the game? My thought is that we are paying a premium for these online services, they should at least have enough backbone to maintain the connection themselves. Then they’re going to blame the developers for forcing too much data across the net. Then developers in their lack of knowledge in networks blame the network for speed and instability. I think that there needs to be some changes in how online gaming is hosted. Any thoughts?
Well, I personally wouldn’t know seeing as how I’m playing the Wii… you know, the only next-gen console with 0 online games…
It would be nice to have a dedicated host…a nice, fast one. Luckily, I haven’t had too many problems with lag on XBox Live, but when it does occur it’s a pain. Man, I need my 360 back so I can jump back on Live.
