Found several items in Zelda II last night, including the hammer, the power glove, the water of life and the fairy spell. The hammer smashes rocks on the overworld map, allowing access to to new areas. Hans has just informed me that the power glove smashes blocks in the side-scrolling areas. The water of life cures a woman’s sick child. Finally, the fairy spell literally turns Link into a fairy and allows him to fly around the screen, pretty sweet stuff.
