In a new article on MSNBC.com, editors pick their top 5 favorite boss battles of all time. Any Top 5 Boss Battle List without an appearance from either:
that thing at the end of the original Contra or,
is totally flawed, if you ask me. (Which, to be fair, no one did.)
Psycho Mantis?? Give me a break. He was not that bad. I beat him in 2 tries. Jaquio was ridiculous and is in my top 5. In no particular order, here are mine. Jaquio, Elecman (Megaman 1), M.Bison (SFII) was just plain cheap, The Joker in Batman (NES), and finally Sephiroth.
Good call on M. Bison. That guy is seriously cheap.
Psycho Mantis wasn’t hard but he was a pretty cool boss… what with reading your memory card and all.
Dr Wiley is definitely one of the greats…he just keeps coming back for more. I would also include Kefka from Final Fantasy XI (or III if you are like me and played it on SNES). There are so many great bosses, it’s hard to pick just a few. Man, the hydra from God of War was cool and all, but top 5? You gotta be kidding me. By the way, the heart at the end of Contra was Red Falcon. That was definitely an unexpected boss for a name like that! Let’s not forget the Cyberdemon from Doom! Great, badass boss there.
I also forgot to add Mech-Hitler from Wolfenstein 3D..total classic.
Ahh yes, thanks Hans. Yeah, Red Falcon isn’t the first thing that popped into my head when I first saw that monstrosity.
While Sephiroth is cool and all, the battle itself never really captivated me. Ganon will always be the high water mark for me. If you wanna go for difficulty, I’d say either Gil from SF III or Onslaught from Marvel vs Capcom. Or really any boss from KOF.
King of Fighters does take the cake for cheap, tough bosses. Art of Fighting’s Mr. Karate was tough as nails, too. SNK was rather infamous for its punishing difficulty in fighting games.
